Angelina Jolie to Join Marvel Cinematic Universe With ‘The Eternals’

The Marvel Universe just nabbed another star for its constellation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Angelina Jolie is in talks to join The Eternals, Marvel’s upcoming offering directed by indie auteur Chloé Zhao. It is not yet clear which character Jolie would play.

The Eternals, based on Jack Kirby’s 1976 comic, is about a superhuman race created by a divine group called the Celestials. Quick cheat sheet: the villainous Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, is an Eternal, and Star-Lord’s dad, Ego, played by Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is a Celestial. The Eternals are created to protect Earth from a dark group called the Deviants. Per T.H.R., Zhao’s adaptation might also include “the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.” Marvel had no comment when reached by the outlet.

A Marvel movie is, in a way, a return to form for Jolie, who’s already a blockbuster member of the Disney family thanks to her starring role in Maleficent. She’s also a seasoned action star, having led franchises like Tomb Raider and stand-alones like Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Salt. Jolie has spent the last few years moving behind the camera, directing heavy dramas like Unbroken and First They Killed My Father, but it appears she’s having a lite acting renaissance.

Aside from The Eternals, she’s also starring in the upcoming fantasy film Come Away, a prequel tale that blends the worlds of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. She’s also got the action-centric Those Who Wish Me Dead, an assassin drama directed by Taylor Sheridan. The move to Marvel is perhaps the natural next step—and one that might impress her brood of teens and pre-teens. She’s not a regular mom, she’s a cool mom, et cetera, et cetera.
